Biodiversity Net Gain

Created: 7 June 2024

Introduction

The Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) guidance document outlines essential information for achieving BNG in major planning applications, effective from 12th February 2024. It includes basic knowledge, steps for achieving BNG, and links to detailed resources.

What is BNG?

From February 2024, major planning applications must establish a biodiversity baseline before development and deliver a minimum uplift of 10% post-completion, using the statutory BNG metric. Local planning authorities may require higher percentages.

How to Achieve BNG

BNG can be achieved by enhancing and restoring biodiversity on-site or purchasing BNG credits if on-site enhancement is insufficient. Gains must be maintained for at least 30 years. Exemptions apply to certain sites, and irreplaceable habitats are excluded from mandatory BNG.
