Fuel and Oil Management

Introduction

The January 2016 Toolbox talks on pollution prevention highlight crucial guidelines for managing fuel and oil on construction sites to avoid environmental damage and legal consequences. Poor storage, inadequate refuelling practices, vandalism, and neglected plant maintenance can all lead to harmful spillages, necessitating proactive measures for prevention and response.

Key Strategies 

1. Proper Storage and Bunding: Ensure all fuel and oil storage tanks are bunded with a capacity exceeding 110% of the tank volume to contain spillages effectively. Securely store containers in designated, bunded areas away from watercourses to prevent contamination.

2. Regular Inspection and Maintenance: Implement regular checks on tanks, containers, and bunds for any signs of damage or leaks. Supervise all fuel and oil deliveries to mitigate risks during transfer and storage.
