Introduction

This information sheet explains how to prevent falls from boom-type mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs), commonly known as ‘cherry pickers’. It focuses on preventing falls rather than mitigating the effects once a fall occurs and covers all types of MEWPs, including vehicle-mounted, self-propelled, and trailer-mounted. The guidance excludes risks associated with working near or on overhead power lines, climbing out of MEWPs, and detailed training requirements for operating MEWPs. This sheet was produced in consultation with the International Powered Access Federation Ltd and the Construction Plant-hire Association.
