Introduction

The European Union has introduced REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation, and Restriction of Chemicals) to address the significant risks posed by chemical substances. This policy requires producers and importers to provide detailed information on the chemicals they handle, ensuring safer use and reducing health and environmental risks.

Chemicals and a Strong Industry

Chemicals are integral to modern products, providing essential properties like softness, firmness, and durability. Since 1930, global chemical production has surged from 1 million to over 400 million tonnes annually. The EU’s chemicals industry is a key economic sector, employing 1.9 million people across 31,000 companies and leading globally with 33% of the world’s chemical sales in 2004.
