Ionising Radiations Regulations

Introduction

The Ionising Radiations Regulations 1999 (IRR99), made under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, aim to protect workers and the public from the harmful effects of ionising radiation. By implementing the Basic Safety Standards in Great Britain, these regulations replace the previous IRR85 and establish comprehensive guidelines to keep radiation exposure as low as reasonably practicable.

Overview of IRR99

The IRR99 regulations were introduced to replace the Ionising Radiations Regulations 1985 and to implement the Basic Safety Standards Directive 96/29/Euratom. These regulations aim to control exposure to both natural and man-made sources of ionising radiation, ensuring that the dose limits specified for individuals are not exceeded. Additionally, IRR99 replaces the Ionising Radiations (Outside Workers) Regulations 1993 and partially implements the Medical Exposures.
